JoSAA 2026 – the joint counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs – closed its final seat allotment on 16 July. Registration had opened on 2 June, and five rounds later, seats across 121 institutes including all 23 IITs were allotted. If you’re in the 2027 batch, this is the machine your rank will eventually feed into, so here’s how it works.
JoSAA runs on two different ranks at once: IIT seats use your JEE Advanced rank, while NITs, IIITs and GFTIs use your JEE Main rank. This is why a serious aspirant never treats JEE Main as “just the qualifier” – it’s the rank that decides your NIT branch if Advanced doesn’t go your way.
Seats move in every round as candidates float, slide and withdraw. A branch that looks out of reach in Round 1 regularly opens up by Round 4 or 5. The candidates who lose out are usually the ones who didn’t understand freeze–float–slide rules, not the ones who lacked rank.
Rehearse for it every day – lessons, real-pattern mocks and reports that tell you the truth about your preparation.
